Water - Nursery and Kindergarten

First: Opening prayer; get the children to repeat after the Spiritist volunteer. As weeks go by the Spiritist volunteers should encourage the children to volunteer for this task. If they don’t want to collaborate we could say we will follow the letters of the alphabet. The child’s name that starts with the letter A will do the opening prayer this time. Everybody will have the chance to collaborate as the weeks unfold. The child’s name that starts with the letter B will do the closing prayer at the end of the session.

Second: Welcome the children into the session. Say how happy we are to see them there and how important they are for the class. Sing songs together; get the children to remain standing but in a circle.

         Hello my friend,
         Let’s learn and play,
We will learn about Jesus all night long!

         Good morning

Good morning, good morning, good morning (say the name of one of the children)
I am so happy today. Hooray!
Good morning, good morning, good morning (say the name of one of the children)
         My heart wants to say
Good morning, good morning, good morning (say the name of one of the children)

         Let's all sing and play
For Nature is so beautiful and wise
Teaches us to love every day

+++ repeat this song if necessary, as every child should hear their name being sang; this will help the children to feel integrated into the group)

+++ sing other songs from the songs’ list as per attached here.

Third: Get the children to sit down into a circle. Read a book with the children that discuss nature. Try informational books like "How to Save the Planet" by Barbara Taylor, "Be a Friend to Trees" by Patricia Lauber and "Where Does the Garbage Go?" by Paul Showers. Any picture book that mentions or shows nature also works for environmental education. Discuss how the characters interact with nature in the book.

         Fourth: Ask the children

         * What might happen if they didn't respect nature?

         * Do you know where the water comes from? The rain comes from the clouds. The clouds are made of water vapour. When lots of clouds get together that’s when rain happens

         * What about the rain? Who created the rain? God, our loving Father, created all beings and resources for our development. The water is very important for us. Our bodies are primarily made of water.

         * What’s the purpose of the rain? The purpose of the rain is to enable life on planet earth. It would not be possible for life to exist without the rain. All living creatures rely on the rain: human beings, animals and plans.

         * What do we need water for? Listen to their answers.

Fifth: Distribute a picture of a cloud and get the children to glue cotton on it.

Click here to find a picture of a cloud, taken from the internet.

Sixth: Get the children to stand up. Ask them to form a circle and make sure they remember where their spot is. Tell them that the music will play and we should all dance, celebrating nature. They should move across the room dancing but when the Spiritist volunteer says ‘It started to rain’, they should all go back to their spots. Get the music to play again and repeat this exercise at least three times.

Seventh: Water drop exercise - Get each child a balloon. They will need to throw all of them in the air and make sure no water drop falls on the ground. Get them to throw all balloons but when the music stops each child should grab a balloon.

Eighth: Get the children to help cleaning the room.

Please find an activity that can be given to the children as homework here.

Closing prayer - one of the children will do a closing prayer; encourage the children to volunteer for this task. If they don’t want to collaborate we could say we will follow the letters of the alphabet. The child’s name that starts with the letter A will do the opening prayer this time. Everybody will have the chance to collaborate.
