Learning how to be Tolerant for First Cycle
First: Welcome the children into the session. Say how happy we are to see them and how important they are for the class. Explain we will follow the letters of the alphabet in order to choose the volunteer for the opening prayer. So, the child’s name that starts with the letter A will do the opening prayer this time. Everybody will have the chance to collaborate as the weeks passed by.
After that, the Spiritist worker will introduce the “Raffle Box of Prayers”. In your turn, each child will open the box, choose one prayer and read it loudly for whole class. We will do it until all the kids have their chance to choose and read a prayer.
When the activity with the “Raffle box of Prayers” finishes the volunteer will collect the booklet “The Lord’s Prayer” with the children who was responsible in the previous week.
The volunteer can make up a few questions, such as:
* What did you most like in this prayer;
* What could you learn during the week with the prayer and others.
The child can also read the prayer for his/hers colleagues. Another child will be able to choose himself/herself to take the booklet home and bring next week, at the end of this activity.
The Lord’s Prayer booklet
P.S. At the end of the class the parents will be informed and also asked about their availability to bring the booklet next week.
Second: Prayer Activity – Each child will receive a piece of paper with a picture on the side. The children will be asked to prepare a prayer (what they would say to Jesus or God) within the topic of the picture (i.e. rain, sunshine, trees, people, etc). The volunteers will be all around in order to help the children to prepare their prayers. As soon as they finish they will be encouraged to read it to their colleagues and place the prayers inside of the “Raffle box of Prayers”.
Third: Create a sign - The children should create 2 signs called: My turn and Wait.
In one side of the sign they would write (My turn or Wait) and in the other what they should do or how they should behave at each time. For example:
Wait: respect, be quiet, listen, be polite,…
My turn: talk and express myself or my thoughts, do the activity, entry in places, grab a chair, etc.
Fourth: Memory Game - The volunteer will bring the following words or the children to guess what they are: respect, tolerance, patience, turn, Jesus, God and love.
Each word will be printed out twice and divided letter by letter. All the letters will be placed together on the table.
Extra idea: the signs which were created previously can be used for the children during the activity; they will be encouraged to respect each one’s time, to wait or to do what is required within the activity.
Fifth: The meaning of the word - The volunteer will bring pictures and definitions of each word used in the previous exercise. The children should match each picture and definition with the right word.
The volunteer will discuss about it after they finish.
Sixth: Slide show.
The volunteer will bring a slide show with pictures of children waiting for: the bus, to entry in the school, in front of the restaurant, to be seated, for a present, being quiet, respecting other, listening, etc.
Children and volunteer will discuss all those actions. The volunteer can also ask if the children have experienced any of these and how they have felt. The signs created (My turn and Wait) might be used here as well.
Extra activity: The volunteer will bring pieces of paper with some places or situations written on it such as school, home, restaurant, spiritist centre, with parents, with friends’ house, with brother or sisters.
The children will be asked to draw how they should behave in order to behave with tolerance in each place or situation which was shown before. A big poster will be prepared by the children and pictures can also be attached to it.
Seventh: Video - “Let the little children come to me” from the DVD: DVD Bible read and share by Nelson Thommys
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rh3RDe_cpyI
Full movie can be found here, however the part that will be used starts from 45:25 and finishes at 46:35.
Eighth: Good actions - The volunteer will bring many small heart shapes and the children should write in each one of them actions they do that make them stay closer to Jesus.
Each child, in his/her turn, should ready it out loud to the group and stick it in a big heart shape.
Idea: the volunteer can stick a picture of Jesus in the middle of the heart.
Ninth: Reading Time - Spiritist Books for children will be placed on the table. The child would be invited to share, to read and say what they understand about what they just read.
Tenth: Healing Theatre - The volunteer will bring many pieces of paper with good instructions. 2 children will participate on the activity at time. 1 child needs to sit down on the chair meanwhile the other will read the instructions. The child who is sat down should follow the instructions told by the colleague. If the child who is seat down would follow all the instructions he/she will deserve a “well done” stick. All the children will have the change to participate.
Eleventh: Closing prayer - One of the children will do a closing prayer. Explain we will follow the letters of the alphabet in order to choose the volunteer for the closing prayer. So, the child’s name that starts with the letter B will do the opening prayer this time. Everybody will have the chance to collaborate as the weeks passed by.
