Good manners III

The children are around 3 to 4 years of age in kindergarten groups; some of them are not yet familiarised with group activities, perhaps because they are just starting to attend nursery or not yet going to school.

We prepared a disciplinary method using panels, which was successful, with illustrations made from Ethylene vinyl acetate (also known as EVA) and little rules for the class room. On the first year, we created the “Good manners’ Tree”; on the second year the “Good manners’ little lake” and this year we will use the "Forest of Good manners ".

         Material used:

Non Woven Textile for the wall paper

Ethylene vinyl acetate (also known as EVA) to build the forest’s landscape

A4 sheet to make little plaques with the rules

          Hot glue

          String

Velcro cut in small pieces so you can move the characters and/or objects around the panel

         Opening Prayer

First: : attach the panel called the “Forest” to the wall without the rules. Explain to the children that this panel will be kept with us during this year to teach us very gook things.

Second: tell them a story where a tree from the forest is the main character. Explain that this tree is sometimes very happy (we then place a little smiley mouth on it) but sometimes it is sad (replace it so the tree looks like it’s quite sad).

Please ask the children if they know when and why people feel happy or sad. They love to share situations they have been through. Please explain that for people to live happy and at peace it is necessary to respect some rules.

As soon as the spiritist teacher states each of the rules out loud, the little frogs with velcro should be placed into the lake. Please explain the importance for each of these rules to be respected for the class to run smoothly.

What happens when these rules are not respected? First the spiritist teacher will notice the agreement is not being fulfilled; the group will then be given another chance to improve. In case this warning is not respect, the little frog that corresponds to the rule that is not being respected will be removed from the lake. The tree will then feel sad (little sad mouth should be placed) until the rule is respected once again.

The result is very positive since children make an effort for the panel to have a happy face once again. They learn from an early age and in a concrete way that the Law of Cause and Effect happens at all times. It happens not just when we act well bringing us good consequences, but also when we act incorrectly resulting in something bad.
