Jesus - Parables

         Greetings and Opening Prayer

         First: read and comment the text below.

Jesus

         Much has been researched, written and spoken about Jesus’ passing on the planet Earth. There are still uncertainties about the exact time he lived on Earth as well as if some events were understood and translated correctly. Therefore, this doesn’t alter the message of love he left us with. There are no doubts about the importance and simplicity of his moral teachings that trespassed time and generations.
         Jesus taught by example. He taught in the places where he stopped by during his three years of pilgrimage through a small region. He didn’t found schools nor taught at the existing ones. He left no writings; he didn’t create a religion or bear any land title. His lessons were transmitted by words that exuded wisdom and humility. He proclaimed love, forgiveness and peace. He became the living model of the unforgettable message he left us with.
         He used simple words, touched the hearts and minds of those who heard him, telling stories. He used everyday situations of their time in order to be understood by everybody. He is a Spirit of light, who healed, without judging the origin of evil; he listened to the people, clarifying and comforting. He never wanted to be glorified or feared; by contrast, he wanted to be everyone’s friend and brother. He treated everybody equally; with love, patience and devotion.
         Every heart must nurture the living Christ, a beacon of hope and faith, instead of a crucified Christ, exuding sadness and pain. In The Spirits’ Book, Kardec said: ‘Jesus is the type of the moral perfection to which man may attain upon this earth. God offers Him to our thought as our most perfect model and the doctrine taught by Him is the purest expression of the divine law, because He was animated by the divine spirit, and was the purest being who has ever appeared upon the earth.’
         Jesus was the greatest teacher that we know of. He was wise, balanced and had an intelligent kindness that captivated. He demonstrated the way to the truth and to life with his love for God and humanity. And he continues to invite us today to the pathway of love; to follow his footsteps.

         Second: divide the class into groups, giving a copy of ‘The Spirits’ Book’ for each group.

         Third: ask them to look for question 625 in The Spirits’ Book and read it.

         625. What is the most perfect type that God has offered to man as his guide and model? "Jesus."

         If some of those who have professed to instruct man in the law of God have sometimes led him astray by the inculcation of error. It is because they have allowed themselves to be swayed by sentiments of too earthly a nature, and because they have confounded the laws which regulate the conditions of the life of the soul which regulate the life of the body. Many pretended revealers have announced as divine laws what were only human laws, devised by them for serving their own passions and obtaining dominion over their fellow-men.

         Fourth: give each group a parable told by Jesus; ask them to read and exchange ideas in the group. Here are some suggested parables for this activity:

          Parable of the Sower - Matthew 13: 1-9;

          Parable of the Good Samaritan - Luke 10: 25-37;

          Parable of the Unmerciful Servant - Matthew, 18: 21-35;

          Parable of the Prodigal Son - Luke 15: 11-32;

          Parable of the Rich man and Lazarus - Luke 16: 19-31;

          Parable of the Pharisee and Publican - Luke, 18, 9-14.

         Fifth: Comment on question 625 from The Spirits’ Book.

         Sixth: Ask each group to tell their parable to the other groups as well as talk about its meaning.

         Closing Prayer
