And one day a certain lawyer stood up to test Jesus, saying, ‘Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus replied, What is written in the law? How do you read it? And the lawyer answered, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbour as yourself.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘You have answered correctly. Do this and you will live’.

But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbour?’ And Jesus answering said, ‘A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of thieves. They stripped him of his clothes, wounded him and departed, leaving him half-dead. By chance there came down the road a priest; and when he saw the man he passed by on the other side. So too a Levite, when he came to the place and saw the man he too passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan as he journeyed, came to where the man was; and when he saw him, he had compassion on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring in oil and wine and put him on his own donkey and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day before he departed, took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper and told him to take care of the man, saying ‘Whatever you spend more, when I come again I will repay you’.

Which now of these three do you think was neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of the thieves? The lawyer replied, ‘The one who showed mercy on him’. Then said Jesus said to him, ‘Go, and do likewise.’
