A real friend
Adapted from Luke, 18: 15 to 17

One afternoon, Jesus was feeling very tired. He had worked quite a lot. He then went to a very beautiful removed place. There were plenty of trees with large green branches there, where he could rest in the shade, and maybe even get some sleep.

Do you know what happened after a while? Many mothers saw that he was there and were soon bringing babies to Jesus for him to place his hands on them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. They began to send away the mothers, because they didn’t want the children to disturb him. The mothers were sad and almost cried. But Jesus is a good friend of us and then told the young men who were with him:

          – Don’t send the children away! Yes, I'm tired, but let the little children come to me, because children are simple, pure, and joyful; they are good! Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.

And the kids came up to Jesus. Little Johnny asked questions. Little Deborah clapped with glee. Do you know what Little Albert did? He placed his little hand in Jesus’ hair and slowly rested his head on his shoulder.

And he stayed there for a long time, feeling the warmth of that friend who said nothing out loud but say much, in Little Albert’s heart. I think these kids have never felt so much joy before!

They were comfortable; at ease. Jesus caressed them and they felt his love; his warmth. That's why there was joy.

When we are with friends we can’t be sad because our friends understand us, laugh with us and even cry with us. They help us in our problems. They make us feel happy.

And Jesus is our best friend! He is a true friend. We can talk to him anytime we want. We simply can close our eyes, pray and thank for this and other days to come. That's what happened at the time when Jesus walked the earth.

One day Jesus told his disciples that the only title that he wanted was "Master". What is a Master? A Master is one who teaches, a Professor; that was what he always wanted to be. Therefore, even today, we call Jesus Master; some more than two thousand years later. This title will never be forgotten.

          * Explain what Jesus meant by happiness, which he calls the kingdom of heaven. This is for those who have pure hearts, like children. For those who are disarmed; ready to receive and make flourish the seeds of his divine lessons. A child can still be an imperfect Spirit who made many mistakes. Therefore, he’s ‘asleep’ in an infant's body; so childhood represents innocence and purity. He also meant that children from an early age should know Jesus, his teachings and put them into practice as soon as possible.
