The meaning of life

The story happened in a faraway country, many centuries ago. The king was sensing his end; he asked his subjects to answer three fundamental questions. The one who best answers these three questions would be rewarded with wealth and honours:

1 - What is the most important place in the world?

2 - What is the most important task in the world?

3 - Who is the most important man in the world?

Wise and ignorant, rich and poor, children and young people, adults and seniors tried to answer the three questions. None of the answers fully satisfied the king, unfortunately.

There remained only one man in the whole territory, who refused to speak. He kept silence and distance, because honours and fortunes didn’t interest him. He was an old man with a high reputation for his wisdom. Emissaries of the king were sent to him to gather his views. The old man then said:

         - The most important place in the world is where you are now.

         - The most important task is not the one you want to do, but the one you must do.

         - And the most important man in the world is the one who needs you, because he is the one that enables you to exercise the most beautiful of all virtues: charity.

The king clapped his hands, thankful and happy. He found a sense for his life at last, a reason for his last days of existence.

So much wisdom in three short answers. The place where I live, I grow, I work and I act is the world's most important place. It’s there I must be useful, helpful and friendly.

The most important task... Maybe your work or my work are not the most pleasant and well-paid in the world. Therefore, we must exercise it with seriousness and love, seeking to fulfil our duty. If we don’t always have what we love, we should love what we have. The small tasks are important. We fail if we neglect it, since no one will execute these tasks on our behalf. And there will be a void in the world and in history.

Everything passes by, everyone gets old and dies. The things that don’t pass are the goodness you plant, the love you share and the joy that you radiate. That's why others are so important in our existences; in our daily lives.

For a flower, the place where it’s located is not important. The important thing is that it blooms, perfuming paths and rejoicing hearts.
