It was in the afternoon when everything happened…. The boat was found in the middle of the Galilee sea, carrying the hope of those men who were used to rude fishing nets and paddles.
They were quite busy with the task. Suddenly, one of them looked up and said: "Look!"
His finger pointed towards the margin where a figure wearing white robes was approaching. The wind was making his clothes curl in his body, showing a tall, thin silhouette against the sky.
The first thought was of fear and anxiety. What was it? Or who would it be? These were the questions that went through the minds of the frightened fishermen.
These men were accustomed to all. They faced the figure fearlessness, in order to discover whether it was a mirage, a ghost or an apparition.
Then one of the apostles cried out: "It is the Lord!"
A mixture of fear and excitement was felt in their hearts. Peter immediately went to the bottom of the boat and tried to cover his body with a garment, showing the respect he had for his Rabbi.
He then came back to his previous position and noted that the figure kept coming towards the boat, walking on water. Peter then said:
- “Lord, if it’s you tell me to come to you on the water.”
What could be seen as a challenge or distrust didn’t reach Jesus’ ears in this way. He understood his apostle’s devotion who wanted to participate in that unusual phenomenon. Jesus extended his hand and said, "Come."
Peter left the boat and started walking towards Christ. His eyes fixed on Jesus’ enormous blue eyes. They seemed to shine in a strange way, on that afternoon-evening.
He felt the forces that sustained him before his fingers touched the hands of his divine Friend. However, the winds have been made stronger and the apostle felt afraid.
For a brief moment, his eyes searched the water on which he walked by. He then realized that no physical support sustained him; he was now filled with dread.
“- Lord, save me!”
His body was now sinking into the waters. Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.
- “You of little faith why did you doubt?”
Many of us are men of little faith. Jesus comes towards us, demonstrating through serenity that everything is fine. He soon offers us his peace; the tempests will cease.
We are prepared to go to him when we extend our hands. But if the winds of adversity blow halfway through, we fail. We dive into the deep waters of sorrow and melancholy just like Peter, from where we are not always removed promptly from.
We lack faith. This faith is the assurance of the Divine Presence and the constant Loving support we receive.
