Self-knowledge II

          Greetings and Opening Prayer

First: Read Question 919 from The Spirits’ Book.

         Second: comment on it.

Question 919 from The Spirits’ Book tells us that the most effective way to improve ourselves and resist evil is to get to know ourselves. Allan Kardec asked the spiritual benefactors about this as he knew how difficult it is for us to get to know ourselves. A spirit-friend replied that when he was here on earth, at the end of the day he questioned his consciousness on all he had done or failed to do on that day; if his actions represented a relief for his conscience or an indication of something bad that must be healed.

He even suggests when we are in doubt as to the quality of any of our actions, we should ask ourselves what would be our judgement in regard to it, if it were done by someone else?

Saint Augustine also highlights we should not overlook the opinion of our enemies, for they have no interest in disguising the truth. God often places them beside us as a mirror, to warn us more frankly than would be done by a friend.

We can conclude that the ones who really have the will to improve should probe their conscience where possible and correct their actions; thereby freeing themselves of their evil tendencies.

Third: tell the story The Man and the River.

Fourth: conclude at the end of the story: The man felt hurt, injured and ended a relationship of friendship, affection and respect. He knew that the River, a good friend, couldn’t turn back.

Fifth: ask everyone to be at ease in the room. Play soft background music, preferably one with sounds of nature. Write the follow questions below in the board while the adolescents relax, so they can reflect on them for a moment:

To what extent do we know ourselves?

What do we know about our reactions and feelings?

Do we often act or react when we feel hurt, betrayed?

Sixth - Activity: hand over a copy this Personality Test. to each adolescent. Ask them to take their time to answer it. Explain that the test seeks to reflect on the knowledge each one has of him/herself; the score is just a point of reference.

         Closing prayer
