Francisco Cândido Xavier’s had a father, a mother and nine siblings.

Chico was still very young when his mother died. His father was forced to send the children temporarily to live among relatives and friends.

The lady who stayed with Chico was very poor and sick. The boy starved and went through other difficulties. He used to go to the backyard, beneath a banana tree, to pray as his mother had taught him when she was still alive. On these occasions, his mother appeared to him in spirit and consoled him.

One afternoon, at prayer time, he met his disincarnate mom, who then asked him the reason for his sadness.

         - So don’t you know? - Chico explained - I've been very hungry...

         - Now you're complaining too much, my son! - Maria João de Deus said. - Greedy boy always has indigestion.

         - But today I wanted to eat something.

His mom hugged him and recommended:

         - Keep praying and wait.

The boy kept repeating the words of the Lord’s Father. Suddenly, a large dog entered the yard from the street.

He approached him and dropped a dark object from his jaws. It was a tasty fruit...

Chico grabbed it, cheerful, while he saw his mom by his side. It was quite a heavy fruit. She added:

         - Mix the fruit with water. You will have a good nutritious food.

She said goodbye to the child and added:

         - As you can see my son, when we pray with faith even a dog can come to help us, in Jesus' name.
