LETTER FROM SENATOR PUBLIUS LENTULUS TO THE EMPEROR TIBERIUS CÉZAR, DISCRIBING JESUS MORAL AND PHYSICAL FEATURES

"Knowing that you wish to know what I will tell you… There is a man in our times, who currently lives of great virtues, named Jesus. The people call him prophet of truth. His disciples tell that he is son of God, creator of heaven and earth and of all the things that are and have been in the planet. In truth, O Caesar, every day we hear wonderful things about that Jesus: He raises the dead, and heals infirmities. He is a man of medium size; he has a venerable aspect, and his beholders can both fear and love him. His hair is of the color of the ripe hazel-nut, straight down to the ears, but below the ears wavy and curled, with a bluish and bright reflection, flowing over his shoulders.

It is parted in two on the top of the head, after the pattern of the Nazarenes. His brow is smooth and vary cheerful with a face without wrinkle or spot, embellished by a slightly reddish complexion. His nose and mouth are faultless. His beard is abundant, of the color of his hair, not long, but divided at the chin.

His look is very warm and deep; he has expressive eyes. What is surprising is that his eyes glitter on his face as the sun's rays, but no one can stare his eyes because when it shines, people panic and when it softens, it makes you cry.

It is said that nobody ever saw him laugh, but rather weep. His arms and hands are very beautiful; when he lectures, he is very happy. When he approaches, it can be seen that he is very modest in the presence and in person. He is the most beautiful man you can imagine, very similar to his mother, who is a rare beauty. We had never seen in these parts a woman as beautiful as her. If your Majesty, O Cesar, would like to see him as you wrote last time, give me orders. I will send him to you as soon as possible.

He knows all the sciences and never studied anything. He walks barefoot and without anything on his head. Many laugh seeing him that way, but in their presence, talking with him, tremble and admire him. They say that such a man was never heard in this area before. In fact, according to what the Hebrews tell me, such advices of great teachings, as taught by this

Jesus, were never heard before. Many Jews consider him as Divine and many question me, saying he is against the law of Your Majesty. I am greatly disturbed by these evil Jews.

It is said that Jesus never hurt anyone. Those I know and have practiced with him claim to have received great benefits and health from him, but I'm very ready to obey you. What your Majesty orders will be fulfilled. Públio Lentulus, governor of Judaea; Lindizione setima, luna seconda.”

(This document was found in the files of the Duke of Cesadini in Rome. This letter, which tells the physical and moral portrait of Jesus, was sent from Jerusalem to the Emperor Tiberius Caesar in Rome at Jesus’ time.)
